rsn - Perpetuity #1
Released: April 24
The latest album from German drone project rsn is a testament to his their ability to craft slow-building pieces that are both minimalistic and intricate at the same time. In usual fashion, the album is broken into two distinct parts, numbered sequentially. The first part is light and rather sparse, centering itself around a thin drone that oscillates in deliberate and almost predictable fashion as is switches between mysterious shimmer and foggy shine. The entire first movement sits in a sort of neutral area, a warm and gentle blank space that comes up to a level of minor intensity but remans sedate. It makes for a rather calm and behaving introdusction as the faint frequencies encircle one another in a slow dance.
The second movement in this two piece is far more assertive in its presence. That same sense of sparseness is present here as well, at least at first. As new frequencies stack on top of one another, slowly and gradually, the intensity builds ever so slightly. Growing at a tree-like pace, the sonic foundation begins to widen, growing thicker and fuller with it barely being noticed until well after it has grown. This process continues all the way until the final minutes, reaching a point of being nearly overwhelming. And then, with but a minute left, it begins a quick retreat, slowly fading away with a few intermittent notes of intensity as the energy dissipates and we are left back in a moment of continuing silence.
