Jonny Fallout - The Subconscious
Jonny Fallout’s latest EP on Triplicate Records is a succinct little piece spanning five tracks that mostly keep an upbeat demeanor. It spans the range of downtempo with piece of drum and bass in there as well in a somewhat dance-oriented package. There is, of course some fun pieces of vocal sampling in there that feel well placed, especially in the breakdowns where everything falls away temporarily and we’re treated those wavy watery SpongeBob vocals guiding us on these small sonic journeys. “Only the Beginning (Dreamer Mix)” is a perfect example of this as it starts out with the words “only the beginning” showing the song’s intro, which fade out and we get the luscious lead synth coming in with a chill burn and bass rhythm.
For much of the album, the synth work is the star here, as Jonny is able to weave so rather intricate melodies around the rhythm quite beautifully. The rhythmic elements alternate between having an upfront focus to something that just kind of connecting other ideas in the background. This dichotomy can be heard on “Reflection” where in the first half we have a mild, even kind of subdued beat in the background. Then, following our second breakdown, it comes back with a snappier and more upfront feel, creating a wonderful pumping effect between the synth and the drums. Overall, it’s a fun and enjoyable little EP that is great for behind the wheel or with a PlayStation controller in your hand.
