Euan Dalgarno - Uoying Remixed

 Released: October 3

In what serves as less of a follow up and more of a compliment to his most recent album, Euan Dalgarno brings us a collection of remixes to this year’s Uoying that provides a rather interesting recontextualization to a selection of tracks. Where the original album was highly atmospheric and abstract in numerous ways, many of the remixes here find a certain grounding in rhythms and melodies that are imparted by some of the artists doing the remixes. One that stands it in this respect is the remix of “iasso” by Faex Optim.

Here he brings his signature penchant for catching melodies and tightly mixed drums into a house-inflected downtempo tune where the original track gave us a smattering of dizzying synth runs and airy textures. Listening to the two back to back makes for a rather interesting juxtaposition as the almost feel like a true continuation of one another. Simon Heartfield makes a similar mark on this track with his airer remix and Canaan Balsam keeps the abstract motif and recontextualizes it into an almost blissful ambient track. “Starglider” gets a post-industrial type of treatment as Precenphix makes his mark on it and the gtekbombas mix leans heavily in ethereal atmospheres.

For listening, I highly recommend hearing the original album in its entirety first. While all of the remixes here are excellent and intriguing, it’s really the contrast that is made between the two that makes this album fun to listen to. It’s especially captivating to hear Euan’s odd motifs wrapped up in straightforward beats or even convoluted rhythms that add to the dizzying feeling that runs throughout the original album.
