fields we found/quiet details - rhythm structures 02

 Released: July 16

The second in his rhythm structures series, fields we found keeps mainly the same kind of energy for it. To me, this one feels a bit fuller but maintains the same minimalist kind of aesthetic and approach as the first entry. There’s also a definite divide between the first two tracks and the last two tracks in terms of how they are composed and structured. The first two entries lean heavily on very prominent rhythms which borrow heavily from house and techno staples like the repetitive four on floor with some neat bits of auxiliary percussion. The synths that go with this work great but it’s definitely stuff pulled from a more ambient and drone perspective, which works surprisingly well with the solid rhythms to make something hypnotic and strange.

For the second half, gone are these house and techno staples influenced rhythms. Instead we get some abstract percussive elements reversed and delayed into oblivion, which makes them almost fade into the background of strange drone textures that surround them. The final track brings back some more prominent percs, but the rhythm is slow and winding. You can hear the pitchshifting artifacts as well, stretching drum hits in hyper-abstract territory and making them almost completely unrecognizable. This one is probably my favorite moment in this improvised album just because of how oddball all the textures get while still maintaining an intricate sense of rhythm. I enjoy how much it contrasts with the opening tracks, making the whole experience feel like a slow unwinding of the tight rhythms that it began with until it falls into the most unusual of textural motifs.
