lurp sheets - for you

Released: May 7

For you, the latest release from Armenian artist lurp sheets, comes across as rather simplistic in its approach at first. From the very first track “more smiles,” there’s a certain minimalism to the composition, focusing itself on a rather simple little pinging melody and little accompaniment. The second track keeps this minimal approach except this time keeping focus on a strummed guitar placed in a rather intimate but still slightly echo-y space. And for me, this is really where the charm of the album lies, as it doesn’t try to build expansive soundscapes and instead opts to construct small and intimate scenes with each track.

Even the two longest tracks on the album keep with this. “Childhood skiing” takes this intimate minimalism to the extreme as the track is one of the softest on the album. It has this sensation of slowly climbing in volume throughout the runtime, as if we were climbing the mountain ourselves, arriving at peaks and plateaus on our journey to the top. But “good days” takes a different approach with a single tone that has a the perfect amount of wavering to it, but keeps a kind of flatness to it that feels nostalgic and warm.

Overall, for you feels small all around. But this is not a bad thing. It creates that rather nearby feeling, like taking big ideas and scenes but distilling them down to a size that could fit in the palm of your hand. It’s a vibe that I particularly enjoy, one that makes me feel like I am sitting in the same small room of the most inmost thoughts conveyed entirely in aural format. It’s also incredibly serene and heartfelt.
