Released: May 2

A mysterious little album from an equally mysterious producer, this album is actually one of the first from a recently resuscitated label that was last active over a decade ago, IVDT. The album itself is a wonderful and weird listen as it blurs that lines between ambient, noise, and new age type sounds. It starts out rather dark on the first track with deep rumbling tones that are punctuated by low crackles and glitches soaked in reverb. It moves slowly then into more tonal elements, playing out haunted harmonics and other strange tones. It’s a rather ghostly way to start the album, but this general theme persists for the rest of the runtime, although it does manifest itself in different ways throughout.

The overarching progression of the album is one that moves slowly towards brighter motifs while keeping that same ethereal energy. The point in which I felt the shift was right around the middle of the third track, conveniently right in the middle of the runtime. It’s here where I heard brighter tones begin to emerge, although they were still very much weighed down by the darker underlying tones. It resulted in a somewhat conflicted sound, almost bittersweet even. The track immediately following keeps this conflict in the air, though with quite a bit more percussive texture than many of the other tracks. Though I thought this was a very cool change up, especially since the percussion comes across as errant and quite glitched out.

But as the finally track comes on, those uplifting and happier tones show up. Light pads and playful sounding glitches sounder about in the stereo space, creating something that sounds actually kind of mystical. This one stands out as my favorite track here, simply because I love the way it shifts the entire experience from one of melancholy and bittersweet, to something that feels varied and vibrant. I think the arrangement of tracks plays very well into the experience and I would highly recommend committing about 20 minutes to hear the whole thing all at once.
