Jonny Fallout - Travelogue
Released: April 2
So I’m not normally one for the strictly focused dance banger, but Travelogue managed to hook me at the very start with its creative application of vocal samples. I thought it might just be a one-off thing for the opening track, but no. These creative and often psychedelic sounding samples are peppered throughout the whole album, occurring at just the right times to really solidify the atmosphere. Along with these vocals that kind of steal the show, there’s a ton of really cool synth work going as well with some interesting variations among the tracks.
It definitely starts out with that dancefloor focus with the deep house tinged “Oxygen Mask” and the nu-disco inflected “Hello Goodbye,” with the latter feeling like something for the early days of Daft Punk. But then the album takes a slight detour later on with “Faraway Dreams of Other Worlds.” It goes from the heavy dancefloor orientation to a quick detour into some nostalgia soaked synthwave type stuff that feels a lot more cinematic. It quite honestly feels more like music for driving at night than anything else on the album up to that point. The synth line is so on point and the percussion has the perfect vintage twinge to it while remaining fairly modern. I think I can safely say that this one is my standout favorite on the album.
All in all, this is a pretty tight and well-produced album here. The sound design is impeccable and the vibes are on point. It may not be my favorite flavor of electronic music, but I certainly admire the creative approaches here. Especially when it comes to those aforementioned vocal samples. I mean, just chef’s kiss kind of stuff here.
