Exosferics - Demiurgic Velocities of Arcane Signals
Released: September 27
A very downtempo release at its center, Demiurgic Velocities of Arcane Signals is a strange and dreamy feeling album that is filled with warbling tones and dreary atmospheres throughout. Even in the instances where a track takes a more cheery tone, it fees rather sanguine when compared to the others on the album. But this is a rather subjective assertion on my part and I’m sure that others may find a track or two genuinely bright and happy, if not tamped down a bit by more moody elements.
Something that caught my ear beyond just the slightly melancholic tones was the use of fuzzy and degraded vocal samples pulled from radio signals. In some instances, it is rather easy to understand even if completely lacking context. Other times, the degradation iso severe that being comprehensible is out of the question. “DO7AX” starts out with this completely indiscernible vocal samples that becomes gradually more intelligible as the intro continues. It’s a neat little motif that carries on throughout the track as it seems to become a full fledged radio conversation between two or possible more persons regarding something technical. But eventually these voices stop suddenly and the synthetic textures takeover for the remainder of the track.
The album uses a lot of very strange synthetic sounds all over. There do seem to be some elements of field recording and there are points at which I can’t really tell wha is synthetic and what a recorded sound. “Fundamental Bloc” provides a good example of this phenomenon with its off kilter rhythm. I can’t quite tell what the sound is, but it is certainly not your normal bit of percussion. Rather it feels a lot like a door shutting or an object clattering to the floor. But it provides an inventive counterweight to the pulsing bass and the airy pads that comprise much of the track. And of course the radio voice snippets interspersed around help the atmosphere quite a bit as well.
