Please Close Your Eyes - Music For Floating

Released: January 10

Probably one of the most descriptive titles for an album I have ever encountered, Music for Floating is a rather gentle journey but certainly not a static one. The sensation of floating manifests in various ways throughout the album, starting out with the more drone-like and slow-moving “The Moment Before We Sleep” which captures that sensation almost perfectly. The slow swirl around as you feel yourself slipping into the subconscious of rest is the build up for the first half of the track as the second half embodies the seeming weightlessness of drifting fully into sleep with the gentle warmth and dimly lit recesses of the mind reflecting on itself. But the sensation of floating comes about in more energetic ways such as on “The Hollow,” which takes the idea of floating into a more active sensation, perhaps similar to floating high upon the waves of a spiritual or psychedelic experience with near racing piano keys and a persistent background noise that infuses a manic energy into the track.

Both “Piano for Floating” and “Deeper Blue” carry a more active energy as well, but tone things down to an extent. Gentle chords carry the momentum of the latter while exotic melodies that don’t quite stay together fully provide a sense of intricacy on the former. But as the album draws to a close, we return to long pads and gentle swirling of the beginning with “The Time Before The Last.” But this one is not about  the moments before sleep - rather it feels deeper than that, as if this is the last moment before heading to something beyond. Or, at least, that is what I glean from it as the twinkling keys slowly enter the scene and sit seemingly right inside the celestial pads to play out sonic promises of something more. It’s a beautiful juxtaposition that feels comforting and inspiring at the same time.
