Freight Cell - Drifting Through The Structure
Released: December 23
Well known for their repetitive soundscapes, the latest from Freight Cell brings us a cold and uncomfortable industrial atmosphere clocking in right at thirty-seven minutes. With a rather slow development, this long-form track languidly courses through with soft surges of bass tones and persistent grinding texture that experiences subtle changes that seep in almost undetected at first. The fun thing about all of this slow development is that it is made in such a way as to be imperceptible at the time but readily apparent by the end.
The multitude of textures present at any given time (save for the first several minutes as it warms up) feels quite heavy. The stacking of these elements feels haphazard and intentional at the same time. The slow fluttering that feels like a water wheel gone amiss, the gentle grinding, and the heavy background static all coalesce to create something that feels like an impenetrable wall until one takes a moment to listen closer. As you focus your listening, you can hear these very small, very minimal cracks in that wall. Almost as if you get a small peek behind it. True to its title, this heavy composition drifts and exposes the joints and seams of a figurative structure, giving those glimpses of what is and what may be while leaving this bit of mysterious fog about it, never fully revealing itself.
