⍼!!!!!!!!íí ⍼!!!!!!!!íí - The Shift
Released: May 20
Despite being pretty short six track EP, The Shift is positively full of energy. ⍼!!!!!!!!íí ⍼!!!!!!!!íí, which is the unpronounceable alias of Tampa-based Fabrizio Farfàn, melds together a lot of different influences here to include elements of reggaeton and IDM style electronics. The result is borderline madness that makes you want to move but not sure of which way to move. I love the energy and experimentation here and it even kind of reminds me of one of my favorite artists a decade or so back, Kid606. There’s a lot of beat juggling that has tracks going back and forth between genres including breakbeat, jungle, and of course those reggaeton dance beats.
The EP itself feels like it may as well be one big long mix but is handily broken down into pieces. I think one of my favorites on here is “cringedeath,” not just because of the title (although that is fun), but there’s a motif that kind of inverts all the previously prominent beats and gives us something that is much more erratic, unpredictable, and just generally out of pocket. But this track is generally a point in which the energy changes a bit with a lot more random samples thrown in and the beats get a little more relaxed, while still coming across as pretty weird. But all in all, I think the album has a very wild and erratic energy that I really enjoyed. It’s not quite dance music, but it takes the pieces from that realm and incorporates them into a madcap collage aesthetic that is baffling and intuitive at the same time with a crazy summer nights kind of vibe as well.
