ireless - FORESHADOWING

Released: September 30

What is really cool about this short little EP is that it feels like an awesome little time capsule due to when it was actually made. For just about 15 minutes, we get to go back to the early 90s - a time when electronic music was just starting to gain mainstream notoriety, recording was done straight to tape, and breakbeats were the order of the day. So here we have a nice little collection of six songs that embody the time perfectly. The first few tracks lean into the fast paced break driven early dance music, complete with frenetic synths, weird loops, and a few throaty 303s. All of this including that subtle tape saturation from recording straight to one of the four track recorders that we all fondly remember but maybe don’t want to pay several hundred dollars for one that still works.

After the first few tracks, the EP slows things way down and takes us into ambient territory with “New Frontiers.” The longest track on the album, we’re treated to very slow moving pads that re accompanied by some reversed percusion, deep basses, and a bit of pinging high synths and keys. It has a rather improvised feel to it, feeling like it’s being written right in front of us. This one was certainly my favorite, considering it hit two of my favorite things - tape saturation and soft ambient with experimental qualities. The final track brings the tempo back up into downtempo territory with some tight percussion and some more lightly improvised synths. It’s overall a pleasant little fifteen minutes, bringing back a bit of nostalgia in a truly authentic way.
