Dylan Lounsberry - The Grief EP
Released: June 27
The latest EP from Philadelphia-based composer Dylan Lounsberry is relatively short, clocking in at just about 10 minutes in total. But in that short time, Lounsberry sweeps together a wide array of sounds that I suppose you could generally classify under the umbrella of psychedelia although it feels like much more than that. Along with a bit of smooth jazz-inflected guitar, he ties in a whole lot of whimsical synth sounds and some off the wall drum riffs that tie together into something that feels like several emotions all at at once. These's a sense of wonder, a small amount of nostalgia, and something quite heartfelt at the center of it all.
Something I really enjoy about the EP the whole way through is this vague almost Super Nintendo quality to the compositions. It feels like I could close my eyes and be right back there playing some of my favorite RPGs of the day. The orchestral synth lines are well crafted and perfectly compliment the little flourishes that find their way in. Much of it feels lovely and upbeat but Lounsberry is not afraid to vary the tempo throughout. He does this to great effect on what is probably my favorite track, "Out Or Through." It's a shorty little track but it starts out with a a lot of energy, almost reminding me of something you might here at the begging of a Mario Kart race but by the end it has turned into something slow and with an almost yearning or longing quality. But it also segues very well into the final track. All around it's a rather bright and enjoyable album with some seemingly heavy jazz influences that make something bright and wonderful.
