aeoni - Blossom

Released: April 24

The debut album from electronic artist aeoni is a rather nice introduction to her artistic tendencies. One very notable theme that arises in this album is a particular affinity for stacking basses on top of basses. The first track on the album establishes this early as we start off with deep synthetic bass hits that are then joined by a rather twangy kind of bass. It makes for a rather neat little effect as they meld and contrast in equal measure. This stacking re-appears periodically like on “Daphne” where we get an incredibly heavy bass with a huge low end. It gets stacked under this particularly squeaky higher register bass sound as a steady but relaxed rhythm helps hold things together.

On the subject of rhythms, Blossom has quite a lot going on. The rhythmic structure of the tracks varies quite a bit and can be something chill and steady like the aforementioned “Daphne” or something a bit more wild and glitchy like “Nymphaea.” Which, along with have a fantastic rhythm, includes these little chopped vocal synth bits that bounce around in the mix quite nicely while being placed gently in between the rhythmic elements. The other track I particularly enjoyed with a more loose and wild rhythm was the darker-toned “Mandrake.” It has a rather deep rumble in the low end and is more sparse on the synths, but there’s this neat little recurring sound that rotates around the stereo field in a rather stilted fashion, adding just a perfect little touch of wonkiness to the track.

Overall, Blossom is a great little collection of rhythmically-oriented compositions that incorporates a wide pallette of sounds across nine tracks. It’s overall pretty chilled out, has some good ear candy to it, and never overdoes it. It also, hopefully, serves as a good indicator of what to come in future projects.
