About a week or so ago, I was sent a message from a man named Vincent who performs under the alias A Last Picture From Voyager. In this message, there was a link to a video that showed in great detail his process of creating a song with an almost ancient-looking reel-to-reel tape deck with hauntingly beautiful results. After watching, I knew that I would absolutely have to share this.
One of the most off-putting but also engaging aspects of the video is the fact that it seems to blur the line between a deeply introspective live performance and a tape loop how-to video. Watching Vincent carefully splice, loop, and route through effects a piece of tape that may very well be older than some of the persons watching it happen is observing a work of art in itself. The vocal snippet pulled from this old tape is repurposed to create a haunting atmosphere that is joined by a minimal assortment of other instruments to create a piece that is is truly evocative. My only hope is that this composition ends up on a future release.
You can watch the video in its entirety here. For other works from Vincent, check out his Bandcamp and Instagram page.
