The Fringes - On the Radar - November 3

x°=1 - The Art of K7 - vol.#1

Release Date: November 5

Another fantastically strange release from the Steep Gloss label, x°=1 is a collaborative effort of four artists using only cassette tapes as their creative tools. The layering creates extremely bizarre scenes that include all the random bits of audio and noise you might expect. Everything from screeching squalls of audiotape being quickly spun into reverse along with bits of speech and dialogue that plays at variable speeds. There is even the odd bit of music here and there popping in and out of the soundscape. Knowing that this was all created through the use of cassettes makes one wonder what kind of large collection the four possessed during the creation of this and how many of those tapes actually survived the process. No pre-order is currently available but you can follow Steep Gloss on Bandcamp to be notified when it is available on cassette and digital.

bleed Air - Abtruse Theories in Occult Christian Science

Release Date: November 5

Continuing their Learning by Listening series of tapes, this upcoming release on Strategic Tape Reserve takes the concept in yet another direction by broaching the topic of religious study. Very weird religious study at that. While only two tracks long, this release gives us an uncanny delve into a seminary instruction that teaches us all about regrown ribs and the nature of humanity in relation to God. Far from uplifting, the theoretical knowledge provided here is far from comforting to say the least. The backdrop of dark and airy sounds creates a solemn atmosphere as the lectures given by various speakers echo, reverberate, distort, and slow in various ways that educate as they unnerve. Learning is optional, but listening is not. No pre-order is currently available, but you can follow Strategic Tape Reserve on Bandcamp to be notified when it is available on cassette and digital.

Electric Supply Station - Le Crepuscule EP

Release Date: November 5

The debut EP from Electric Supply Station (John Hodgson) on See Blue Audio, this release takes on a moody and mysterious atmosphere with sparse synths that evolve cleverly throughout the tracks and distorted vocal segments that are practically indecipherable. In the available preview track, "Space That Time Forgot," you can even hear some of John's bass playing that was his forte in previous bands before he decided to begin doing solo work in the realm of experimental ambient music. The combination of these elements produces a soundscape that feels simultaneously distant and nearby at the same time and the pieces build together mid-track and fade slowly as the track progress towards its end. Currently available for pre-order on digital only.

Scarless Arms & Star Madman - Endlich

Release Date: November 5

Two artists well known for their bent towards collaboration, Scarless Arms and Star Madman collaborate with one another for the first time to bring us "Endlich." This two-track single sees both artists drift a bit closer to each other's style with dark and eerie pads saturating the original version of the track while a gentle melody played by another synth plays a lead that supports Star Madman's vocals as they join in. The vocals here are nothing short of amazing as well. Their presence dominates the track as soon as they appear, large and reverberant as they are with an air about them that takes on a surreal quality. It is quite amazing as well how this collaboration has brought something that seems a bit uncharacteristically light from Scarless Arms as well, but it is welcomed and appreciated. I am excited to hear the alternate version of this track on release day. Pre-order is currently not available, but follow both Star Madman and Scarless Arms on Bandcamp to be notified on the 5th when it is released.

Equinox & Xqui- External Combustion Tension

Release Date: November 5

A collaboration between two UK-based artists, External Combustion Tension is an odd combination of cryptic spoken word segments and oblique synthesized soundscapes that blend in a captivating manner. While the words are readily understandable, it's not always quite clear what the message is behind it all. Of all the tracks currently available, "The Box" seems to stand out as an unsettling example of the concept at work. Reverberating synths swirl around the stereo field as our ever-present narrator proceeds to vividly describe the content of a terrible dream, periodically reassuring the listener that they have control over the dream while the events play out with a mysterious box in the center of the room. Speaking in strangely descriptive language the entire time, the voice guides you through this peculiar situation to its frightening result. Currently available for pre-order on digital and CD with three tracks available for listening now.

Envelope Muse - Songs of Cadence

Release Date: November 5

Continuing his steady streak of album releases, Australian ambient musician Envelope Muse has brought forth another haunting album that displays a surprising amount of variety in its composition. There is, of course, all of the subtle grinding noise that one could expect from him. But also, there are moments of incredible harmony that maintain the same spooky quality while managing to be rather beautiful at the same time such as on the fourth track "Kairos." This track begins with a dark reverberant noise that gives way to a beautiful yet tortured-sounding string part that carries a mournful tone into the composition. It truly makes for an evocative moment that carries the album forward as we are subjected to the less harmonious parts of industrialized noise and dark atmospheres. No pre-order is currently available but you can follow Envelope Muse on Bandcamp to be notified when it is available in digital format.
